General Program Information

VTRA offers programs to children and adults who live in the Greater Victoria area. The disabilities include but are not limited to cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism, intellectual and emotional challenges, and hearing or vision impairment.

There are 4 riding terms per year, for a total of at least 30 weeks between the months of September and June.

VTRA has part time paid instructors and volunteer Assistant Instructors. Our Instructor’s are certified by Equine Canada and the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA), or by PATH International (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International). Our Association is a member of BCTRA (British Columbia Therapeutic Riding Association) and CanTRA (Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association), and the Horse Council of British Columbia.

VTRA uses and is financially responsible for up to twelve horses in our program. Riders wear safety equipment including a riding helmet, boots with a heel and special transfer belts to be used in case of emergencies. Each rider is supplied with equipment that is designed to assist with their particular needs and may include: special reins for those with only partial use of hands and arms, special saddles for those with little or no balance or who are unable to sit in a conventional saddle, and adaptive equipment to give extra body support. We use mounting blocks and wheelchair accessible ramps where necessary to help with getting riders onto the horse’s back.

Program Schedule

Our program runs from September through June, four days per week. Class times are Monday – Thursday 9:30 – 12:15 and 3:30 – 5:15. Each class is 45 minutes long with a 15 minute interval between them to allow for tack & horse changes and volunteer breaks. Training for all volunteer positions within the organisation is provided.
