One Hoof at a Time – A Campaign to Connect and Support Growing Number of Individuals Experiencing Anxiety and/or Depression
PRESS RELEASE
Victoria/Saanichton – February 3, 2025
Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association is proud to launch its ‘One Hoof at a Time’ pledge event aimed at helping local equestrians improve their mental health, during what is often viewed as the most depressing month of the year.
“By February people have had enough of the dark winter. They haven’t had a break in a while and some find it tough,” says Liz Gagel, Executive Director of VTRA. “We see it. Our programs aren’t just for those with physical or cognitive disabilities, in fact depression and anxiety have become the most frequent diagnoses we support.”
Not surprising considering depression and anxiety have been on the rise in Canada. The most recent survey results released by the Canadian Institute for Health Information found 29% of adults report having experienced depression, anxiety or another mental health condition. That’s up from 20% in 2016.
‘One Hoof at a Time’ participants pledge to spend a certain number of hours with their horses during the two-week campaign. They’ll be supported with tips and personal stories encouraging them to be mindful of how time with horses impacts their emotional wellbeing. All money raised will help fund VTRA programs. “I wish everyone could see the impact our programs have on those living with mental health conditions,” says Gagel. “Some of our participants are functioning professionals with crippling anxiety. Our equine-assisted services have been instrumental in helping treat that anxiety.”
